Travel to Bhutan

By Air

The common arriving and departing by air is Paro. The national airline, Druk Air operates international flights to Bangkok, Kathmandu, Delhi, Rangoon, Bodhgaya in Bihar and Calcutta.Druk Air operates two 72-seats BAe 146-100 four engine jet aircraft.Druk Air used to operate 2 Downier. These planes are now obsolete and the airline has upgraded its fleet with two Boeing.

Druk Air announces schedule changes at least a week in advance in Kuensel, the National Newspaper.Flights are often delayed because of weather and Druk Air recommends that you travel on non-restricted tickets and allow at least 24-hours transit time with your connecting flight in order to minimize the complications of delays.

All landings and take offs are by visual flight rule ( VFR ), which means the pilot must be able to see the runway before landing, and the surrounding hills before takeoff. For the same reason no flight can be operated at night or in poor visibility.

Druk Air on its way to Paro flies over 8 of 10 tallest peaks of the world.These mountains are, Mt. Everest ( 8848 m ) in Nepal/Tibet; Kanchenjunga ( 8586m ) in Nepal/Tibet; Lhotse ( 8511m ) in Nepal; Makalu ( 8463m ) in Nepal; Cho Oyu ( 8201m ) in Nepal/Tibet; Dhaulagiri (8167m ) in Nepal; Manaslu ( 8167m ) in Nepal and Annapurna ( 8091m ) in Nepal.

Your booking contract is made with HimaQuest Tours (“the company,” “we,” “us,” “our”), a licensed travel agent registered with the Department of Tourism (DoT) in Bhutan. All holidays booked with us are governed and protected under Bhutanese laws. We are committed to ensuring a seamless travel experience, adhering to the highest standards of safety and quality. Additionally, any personal information you provide to us will be handled securely and in compliance with applicable data protection regulations.

BOOKING, PAYING AND CONFIRMING FOR A HOLIDAY
To book a holiday, you can use our website or contact us for a quote. Please note that international airfare is not included in the package price and will be quoted separately. The price in your quotation is valid until the expiry date mentioned. We do not provide a detailed breakdown of costs, and all quotes depend on availability and any changes in circumstances.

To confirm your booking, complete and sign the Tour Booking Form and send it to us with a 20% deposit. This deposit secures your reservation or confirms any tentative bookings. If your travel period or our suppliers require a higher deposit, we will inform you when you book. If we arrange your international airfare, payment for it may also be needed at this stage. The deposit is part of your total holiday payment. We recommend getting travel insurance as soon as you book.

Paying the deposit and sending the Booking Form does not mean your booking is confirmed. We will confirm it by sending a detailed itinerary and an invoice with the final payment due date. Make sure we receive your payment by the due date, or your deposit may be forfeited.

If we can’t confirm your arrangements, we’ll suggest alternatives or provide a new quote. If the changes are significant, you can choose to accept them or get a full refund without cancellation fees.

ALTERATIONS, CANCELLATION CHARGES AND REFUND

If you wish to amend your booked holiday, we will provide you with a new quote. Additional fees from hotels and/or suppliers may apply. These fees do not include any reissue or non-refundable charges imposed by airlines for international airfare. If you reduce the size of your group, the price per person for the remaining members may increase significantly.

If you need to cancel your holiday, the following cancellation policy will apply:

  • More than 90 days before departure: 50% of the deposit is non-refundable.
  • 60–90 days before departure: 100% of the deposit is non-refundable.
  • 30–60 days before departure: 50% of the total tour price is chargeable.
  • Less than 30 days before departure: 100% of the total tour price is chargeable.

This cancellation policy does not include international airfare, as refunds are subject to the fare rules of the airline and will be advised separately. Certain cruises, trains, and hotels may have different booking and cancellation terms, which will be communicated before booking and will take precedence over the standard policy above.

Cancellations must be submitted in writing. Refunds will be processed as quickly as possible but may take 2 to 3 months to complete due to airline and international administrative procedures.

Travel Guide to Bhutan

Weather:

Bhutan’s weather can change quickly, so always pack warm clothing. From September to March, expect chilly weather, frost, and possible snowfall above 3,000 meters. Between June and August, temperatures are warmer, but monsoon rains are common.

Entry Requirements:

Most travelers require a visa to visit Bhutan, with the exception of citizens from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. Citizens of these countries can obtain a permit upon arrival with their passport or Voter ID (for Indians).

For all other visitors, please send us a scanned copy of your passport (valid for at least 6 months). We will process your visa and send you a Visa Clearance Letter via email. Upon arrival, present this letter, and your visa will be stamped in your passport, valid for the duration of your stay in Bhutan.

Foods:

Traditional Cuisine: Experience the rich flavors of Bhutanese cuisine by trying classic dishes like Ema Datshi, the national dish made with chili and cheese in a spicy stew that reflects Bhutan’s love for bold flavors. Pair it with Red Rice, a unique, nutty grain that complements various stews and curries. Don’t forget to try Momos, dumplings filled with meat or vegetables, steamed or fried to perfection. Other must-try dishes include Phaksha Paa, stir-fried pork with radishes and chilies, and Jasha Maru, a spicy chicken and tomato stew. These dishes showcase Bhutan’s authentic culinary traditions.

Dress Code:

Bhutan’s national dress, the Gho for men and the Kira for women, introduced in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, symbolizes the nation’s rich culture and heritage. It remains an integral part of daily life and is mandatory in schools, offices, and formal events.

Visitors to sacred sites like temples or Dzongs should dress modestly, wearing long trousers or skirts as a mark of respect. Removing hats and shoes before entering worship areas is customary, reflecting Bhutan’s deep spiritual traditions. Respecting these practices enhances your connection to Bhutan’s unique culture.

Religion:

Bhutan is home to two main religions: Vajrayana Buddhism, practiced predominantly in the northern and central regions, and Hinduism, which thrives in the southern parts of the country. Bhutan is a beacon of religious freedom and tolerance, where people of all faiths live in harmony. Visitors are warmly welcomed to observe and practice their own religious beliefs, reflecting the nation’s inclusive and respectful ethos.

However, for greater convenience and reliable connectivity, especially when exploring remote areas, we recommend activating international roaming on your mobile phone or purchasing a local SIM card. Local SIM cards are affordable and provide excellent network coverage across the country, helping you stay connected with ease throughout your journey in Bhutan.
